A clever cleaning hack reveals how to easily freshen up your washing in the tumble dryer using a simple cleaning sponge and a dash of fabric softener.
Instagram user, Mrs D, has taken to the photo sharing app to share how she gives her laundry a heavenly scent by popping in a sponge soaked in fabric softener — and she claims it works far better than expensive tumble dryer sheets.
Posting to her Instagram stories in a helpful step-by-step, she says: ‘I’ve got two caps of fabric conditioner, which I’m just going to put straight into the bowl. Next, I’ve got a jug of water and all you want to do is just pour it in until it’s just above the actual sponge.
‘You don’t have to let it sit for too long, either. Some people leave theirs for 24 hours to soak, but all you need to do is give it a good squeezing. When you come to use it, all you have to do is fold it in half and squeeze it gently. You don’t want to be squeezing to the point where there is nothing in there. You still want it to be heavy with liquid. It won’t work if you wring it out.
‘I’ve been using these sponges for the past 12 months and I’m still getting use out of them. They are so much better than using tumble dryer sheets. It’s going to save you money as well and your clothes are going to smell really fresh. You’ll also notice that your tumble dryer is giving off that nice scent in your house, too,’ she adds.
Many of her followers commented saying they would ‘never go back to their old ways’ after discovering this hack. One lady even said: ‘I’ve been doing this a while now and I use cut up kitchen sponges instead. I just pop a few in depending how much is going in the tumbler. It’s a fantastic trick to do. Washing always comes out smelling amazing.’
How does it work?
You can simply have a go at this hack yourself by following these simple steps…
1. Fill a medium-sized bowl with warm water and add two cupfuls of fabric conditioner
2. Next, take your cleaning sponge and place it in. Leave it for a short moment so that the sponge fully soaks up the water
3. Take the sponge out of the water and rinse it slightly, so that it won’t drip on your washing
4. Then, place your sponge in your tumble dryer with your laundry and wait to see your the results
